Gate valves are actuated by a threaded stem which connects the actuator (e.g. handwheel or motor) to the gate. They are characterised as having either a rising or a nonrising stem, depending on which end of the stem is threaded. Rising stems are fixed to the gate and rise and lower together as the valve is operated, providing a visual indication of valve position. The actuator takes the form of a nut which is rotated around the threaded stem to move it. Nonrising stem valves are fixed to, and rotate with, the actuator, and are threaded into the gate. They may have a pointer threaded onto the upper end of the stem to indicate valve position, since the gate's motion is concealed inside the valve. Nonrising stems are used underground or where vertical space is limited.

Flexible graphite is used for packing material. PTFE or combined packing material can be also used.

For carbon steel gate valve, the seat is usually forged steel. The seat sealing surface is overlaying welded with hard alloy specified by the customer. For Stainless steel gate valve, the seat is integral with body, or it can be machined directly after hard alloy welded. Threaded or welded type seat is also optional for stainless steel gate valve.

NPS≥2 Gate valves are flexible wedge gate, NPS<2 Gate valves are solid wedge gate.
6. Backseat Design
All gate valves have backseat design.
7. Stem Design
The stem is integral forged design.
8. Stem Nut
Usually, the stem nut is made of ASTM A439 D2. It is also can be made of copper alloy or other materials if being requested by the customer.
Hand wheel or bevel gear box is usually used for gate valve operation, electric actuator also can be used for gate valve operation if being requested by the customers.
